<p>The Philadelphia Phillies restructured star left-hander <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///mlb/players/11757" href="https://thescore.com/mlb/players/11757">Cristopher Sánchez</a>'s contract, ripping up his original deal to give him a new extension in an unusual move.</p><p>Sánchez, who had been under contract through 2028, signed a new six-year extension with the Phillies that kicks in next season. His revised deal, which also includes a club option in 2033, is worth $107 million in guaranteed money, sources told <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7138033/2026/03/22/cristopher-sanchez-phillies-contract-extension/?source=emp_shared_article">Matt Gelb of The Athletic</a>.</p><p>It also includes more than $13 million in performance incentives, sources told MLB reporter <a href="https://x.com/francysromeroFR/status/2035719037557080356">Francys Romero</a>.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Sánchez's salaries in the first three seasons of the new deal will be unchanged from his old contract, aside from guaranteeing the $1-million buyouts of old club options in 2028 and '29. He'll then earn $30 million in both 2031 and '32, <a href="https://x.com/ScottLauber/status/2035797388183421415">Scott Lauber of the Philadelphia Inquirer</a> reports.</p><p>The 2033 club option is worth a base salary of $32.5 million, but could increase to as much as $44.5 million through the incentives, a source told <a href="https://www.mlb.com/news/cristopher-sanchez-extension-with-phillies-through-2032">Todd Zolecki of MLB.com</a>. Alternatively, Philadelphia can buy out the club option for $1 million, according to Lauber.</p><p>Sánchez's $3-million salary in 2026 will remain unchanged.</p><p>"I'm absolutely so proud of being here, and it shows the commitment that this thing happened," Sánchez said via an interpreter, according to Gelb. "They rewarded my work and the way I've been doing the last few years of my work. It's just a great commitment. And I appreciate the team doing this for me."</p><p>The 29-year-old, who will start for the Phillies on Opening Day, was the 2025 NL Cy Young runner-up after posting a 2.50 ERA and 1.06 WHIP with 212 strikeouts over 32 starts. That dominance followed his breakout 2024 campaign that saw him named to the NL All-Star team and earn down-ballot Cy Young support for the first time.</p><p>Philadelphia originally acquired Sánchez from the Tampa Bay Rays for Curtis Mead in November 2019. He made his MLB debut two years later.</p>

The new offensive coordinator dreams about players with elite speed and explosiveness like Mitchell.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Mitchell, a 2023 undrafted rookie picked up by the Baltimore Ravens, averaged 8.4 yards per carry on 47 rushing attempts in his first NFL campaign before suffering a season-ending torn ACL. The injury forced him to miss most of 2024 as well. However, the 24-year-old looked comfortable again last season, averaging 5.8 yards per attempt and regaining his top speed. That explains why the Commanders brought in multiple pass-rushers, including Odafe Oweh and Chaisson. While Oweh stole headlines by inking a four-year, $100-million contract, Chaisson signed for only one year and $12 million.</p><p>Chaisson's prove-it deal could be a steal. Granted, the 2020 first-round pick had a slow start to his career and is on his fourth team in as many seasons. But he's fresh off a campaign in which he set career highs of 18 QB hits and 7.5 sacks as a member of New England Patriots. The LSU product also recorded three sacks in the playoffs.</p><p>Chaisson, 26, may be hitting his prime and could serve as a dynamic No. 2 option with great upside for Washington.</p><h3>CB Nahshon Wright ➡️ Jets</h3><p>The Jets somehow finished last season without any defensive interceptions and desperately needed to upgrade their secondary in free agency. The 27-year-old's size, athleticism, and ball skills fit well in coach Aaron Glenn's system; the Jets, like the 2025 Bears, use man-to-man coverage at one of the <a href="https://www.sharpfootballanalysis.com/stats-nfl/nfl-coverage-schemes/">highest rates</a> in the league.</p><h3>TE Chig Okonkwo ➡️ Commanders</h3><p>The Commanders have prioritized their defense in free agency, but one of their best additions resides on the other side of the ball. Ahead of his age-27 season, Okonkwo signed a three-year deal worth up to $30 million to replace the aging Zach Ertz, who suffered a torn ACL in December and hasn't re-signed with the team.</p><p>In 2025, Okonkwo set career highs of 56 catches and 560 yards while scoring two touchdowns for the Tennessee Titans. In particular, he offers something Washington lacked last year: yards-after-catch ability. The Commanders were the fourth-worst team in the league in that metric, according to TruMedia. Okonkwo, meanwhile, ranked ninth among tight ends in YAC.</p><p>Jayden Daniels helped revive Ertz's career in 2024, targeting the veteran tight end 91 times. Washington is hoping the electric quarterback - now healthy again - can build similar chemistry with Okonkwo.</p><h3>S Jalen Thompson ➡️ Cowboys</h3><p>There's a lot to like about this one. A three-year, $33-million contract for a quality starter who rarely gets hurt is a steal. Although they didn't steal headlines by signing Thompson, no one should be surprised if he becomes a cornerstone of their defense.</p>

"... It's devastating for me to have that conversation, I'm sure challenging for them to hear as well. He started 30 games for New York but failed to establish himself as the team's long-term starter, ultimately leaving the club during the 2017 offseason.</p><p>"Complete full circle moment," Smith said via text Tuesday, according to <a href="https://x.com/AlbertBreer/status/2031439782514180097">Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated</a>. "Looking forward to connecting with all my teammates and coaches and building a new relationship with the fans."</p><p>Smith then served as a backup for several teams, including the Seattle Seahawks during the <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nfl/players/12258" href="https://thescore.com/nfl/players/12258">Russell Wilson</a> era. He finally broke out in Seattle, becoming a quality starter and earning consecutive Pro Bowl berths in 2022 and '23.</p><p>The 35-year-old led the NFL in pass completion rate (69.8%) and threw a career-high 30 touchdowns in 2022.</p><p>The Raiders acquired Smith in exchange for a third-round pick last year, but the veteran passer failed to live up to the hype in his first season with Las Vegas. He threw an NFL-high 17 interceptions in 15 starts. </p><p>The Raiders own the No. 1 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft and are expected to take quarterback <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///ncaaf/players/171730" href="https://thescore.com/ncaaf/players/171730">Fernando Mendoza</a>.</p><p>The Jets' active 15-year playoff drought had just begun when New York drafted Smith in 2013. The West Virginia product now returns to N.Y. with the team still looking to return to the postseason and desperately in need of stability at quarterback.</p><p>Smith is the Jets' first notable offensive acquisition this offseason. He joins a quarterback room that includes <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nfl/players/161671" href="https://thescore.com/nfl/players/161671">Justin Fields</a> and <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nfl/players/210459" href="https://thescore.com/nfl/players/210459">Brady Cook</a>.</p><p>New York strongly focused on the other side of the ball during the first day of free agency Monday, agreeing to sign linebackers <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nfl/players/161845" href="https://thescore.com/nfl/players/161845">Joseph Ossai</a> and <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nfl/players/15795" href="https://thescore.com/nfl/players/15795">Demario Davis</a>, among others. <p>Former UFC heavyweight and light heavyweight champion Jon Jones fired back at Dana White on social media Monday, saying he'd be fine with the promotion releasing him in the aftermath of White's viral remarks about him.</p><p>"If the UFC truly feels like I'm done, then I respectfully ask to be released from my contract today. No more spins, no more games," Jones <a href="https://x.com/JonnyBones/status/2031103838590021805">wrote</a>.</p><p>Jones and White made headlines in recent days after the UFC CEO <a href="https://www.mmafighting.com/ufc/475703/dana-white-jon-jones-was-never-ever-ever-going-to-headline-ufc-white-house-card-very-fair-to-consider-him-retired">insisted</a> Jones was "never" in consideration for the promotion's marquee White House card.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>"Jon Jones is retired because of his hips," White said after UFC 326. "He's got arthritis in his hips. ... Add that on top of all the other reasons that I wouldn't."</p><p>Jones - one of the greatest MMA fighters of all time - disputed White's claims Monday.</p><p>"Dana, you were heated about why I'm not on the White House card, but let's clear something up," Jones wrote. "My team and I were actually negotiating with the UFC for that fight. Real negotiations. I even came down from my original number, and what was I offered in return? I was lowballed.</p><p>"Yes, I have arthritis in my hip, and it's painful. But that doesn't mean I can't fight. So let me get this straight - if I had accepted the lowball offer, suddenly my hip would be fine, and I'd be on the White House card? That doesn't make sense."</p><p>Jones hasn't fought since November 2024 but had been rumored for weeks as a potential candidate to headline the UFC White House card. The UFC legend and Alex Pereira showed mutual interest in a potential megafight.</p><p>However, a bout between lightweight champion Ilia Topuria and interim champ Justin Gaethje will headline the June 14 event instead. Pereira will face Ciryl Gane for the interim heavyweight championship in the co-main event.</p><p>"I understand business deals fall through sometimes, but going out publicly and saying things that aren't true isn't right," Jones added. "After everything I've given to the UFC, the years, the title defenses, the fights, hearing that I'm 'done' is disappointing. Especially when, as recently as Friday, UFC was calling me trying to get me on that White House card for a much lower number."</p>
