Michigan quarterback Bryce Underwood made a bold claim when asked about his motivation heading into the 2026 season.

"I want to prove to myself that I am what I think I am. ... I feel like I'm the best player ever to come out of Michigan," Underwood said, according to WDIV Local 4's Brandon Carr.

When asked why he believes that, he replied, "Because I worked for it."

After being ranked as the No. 1 recruit on the 2025 ESPN 300, Underwood started out the gate as a freshman. He completed 60.3% of his passes for 2,428 yards with 11 touchdowns and nine interceptions in his first campaign. He also tallied 392 rushing yards and six scores on the ground.

The 18-year-old flashed his five-star potential during the season but struggled in the team's final two games against Ohio State and Texas, combining for just 262 passing yards and four interceptions in those losses. The Wolverines ultimately went 9-4 on the season and failed to qualify for the College Football Playoff.

Michigan is entering its first year under new head coach Kyle Whittingham after his 22-year run at Utah. He compiled a 177-88 record and earned two Pac-12 Coach of the Year awards with the Utes.

"It's important we get him playing to his potential," Whittingham said in June of Underwood, according to On3's Griffin McVeigh. "And he's got a ton of it, I can tell you that right now. His toolbox is absolutely incredible with his size and strength and speed. We've got to make sure we get him dialed in."

Underwood has enjoyed working with Whittingham during the offseason and believes the team is trending in the right direction.

"I feel like we're getting prepared more," Underwood said of what his new head coach has brought to the program, according to Carr. "We're more of a player-led team than we were last year. Very player-driven."

The Wolverines will kick off next season against Western Michigan on Sept. 5.
