Yankees' Ryan Weathers: Likely to return as reliever

Rotowire ·

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said that Weathers (forearm) will be shut down from throwing for 2-to-4 weeks but has a "great chance" to pitch again before the end of the season, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.

Analysis:

As expected, Weathers will need to miss more than the minimum 15 days after he sustained a left forearm flexor strain during his start in Saturday's 4-3 loss to the Blue Jays before landing on the injured list a day later. Boone noted that he anticipates Weathers returning this season "in some capacity," which points to the southpaw coming back as a reliever once he eventually completes his throwing progression. Weathers had enjoyed a strong run of form in the second half before hitting the shelf, going 2-1 with a 2.27 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 33:11 K:BB in 39.2 innings over his seven starts since the All-Star break.
