The Washington Capitals acquired defenseman Timothy Liljegren from the San Jose Sharks for a fourth-round pick, the teams announced Friday.

Liljegren is a pending unrestricted free agent carrying a cap hit of $3 million. The Capitals created a vacancy on the right side of their defensive corps after trading franchise icon John Carlson to the Anaheim Ducks on Friday morning.

Washington also traded forward Nic Dowd leading up to the deadline. The Capitals are four points back of the Boston Bruins for the second wild-card spot with two extra games played.

Liljegren's registered 11 points in 43 games this season while logging a career-high 20:08 per contest. The Toronto Maple Leafs traded him to San Jose early in the 2024-25 campaign.
